Solutions to the “I Don’t Enjoy It” reason for not exercising

Oh, we totally understand. There’s a moment where we face a decision tree that consists of exercise… or maybe just chill, grab a light snack, and de-stress with some tv after a long day. In most cases, exercise will lose to those other options that seem easier, and more relaxing. The irony is that it’s exercise that’ll most make you feel good. That feeling you get when the workout is complete - we named ourselves after it, that “cardio high”.

But to get there, you have to start. And that can feel like a mountain to climb. So here are some tips to get you over that hill.

1) Make a list of movements you think are enjoyable, fun or … at least tolerable. Don’t think of exercise as something always has to involve going to a gym or playing a sport. This list could include things like;

2) Dance. Putting on music and dancing like nobody’s watching for 4-5 minutes. Might feel weird when all alone. But it’s quick and hopefully fun.

3) Social. Contact friends and go for brief walk with them.

4) Podcast. Put on a favorite podcast and go for a walk while you listen. Some people also have home exercise equipment they can use for podcast listening.

5) Group fitness. For many people, small group classes tend to be more fun than exercising alone. They usually include music, some optional chat, and encouragement from a trainer. This is more time consuming, but many people find it more rewarding.

6) Games. Simple games like pickleball, shooting baskets, throwing a Frisbee are enjoyable to most people.

7) Learn or Improve a Skill. Try a new sport that might bring some joy. Examples; Climbing at a climbing gym. Stand-up Paddle (SUP), Kayaking, Swimming.
